Registered Training Organisation

Tackling Skills Shortages

Crippling skills shortages seriously affected the Australian construction industry in recent years.

Abigroup has taken a hands-on approach to tackling these shortages by introducing an extensive training programme.

In 2006 Abigroup gained accreditation as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and now delivers nationally recognised assessment, training and qualifications for our employees.

In October 2008 Abigroup opened a new training facility in Victoria. The Truganina Learning and Operations Facility is unique in that it offers employees the ability to undertake formal training - in areas from civil construction to mining - and combine it with practical experience all in one place.

The facility boasts a vehicle simulator in which employees can get used to driving heavy earth-moving equipment from the safety of the training room before tackling them in real life.

At the opening of the facility Victorian Premier John Brumby said “What Abigroup is doing here with its training and operations facility is a great example of leadership for the construction industry right across Australia.”

The aim is to train upwards of 1000 people per year with plans to expand the RTO courses around Australia.

In March 2010 a new training facility was opened in Yatala, Queensland.

At the opening of the Yatala facility, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said "This facility and new training technology represents the innovation and expertise that is behind Queensland's growing economy.

"Abigroup's investment in Queensland will help new and existing construction workers take on new opportunities, work with new technologies and adapt to changing job needs."
