Our Plant Fleet

  • Abigroup investment signals confidence in future

    July 2009

Despite continued economic uncertainty in many camps, major national contractor Abigroup has shown confidence in continuing its strong growth of recent years by taking delivery of an extensive range of new equipment for its national Abigroup Mining Services business.

“We remain committed to growth and continue to expand our mining fleet,” said Abigroup Managing Director David Jurd.

“Growth in our mining division is being facilitated by the depth of earthworks experience that we have developed over the years in our established engineering and construction businesses.  Abigroup has always had a reputation for self-performing all of its own earthworks. This latest investment into mining plant proves not only that this has been a sound model for us in the past, but that it will support continued opportunities and growth for our mining business moving forward.”

Included in the order of Komatsu equipment were five 100 tonne dump trucks; a 200 tonne excavator; three D475 dozers; a wheel loader; and a smaller hydraulic excavator.

The new equipment will be put to work at Iluka’s Murray Basin Stage 2 operation where Abigroup is extracting mineral sands from the Ouyen deposits.

  • The fleet continues to grow

In 2008, Abigroup maintained its ongoing investment in its equipment fleet, which is one of the largest contractor fleets in Australia:

    • Two new Caterpillar 16M motor graders joined the fleet and spent 2008 working on Abigroup's Karuah to Bulahdelah project on the Pacific Highway and later on the Hume Highway in NSW. In addition, Abigroup invested in a simulator of this machine to ensure its operators are well trained and able to optimise its performance.
    • The year also saw Abigroup take delivery of the last four 651E scrapers produced by Caterpillar's Dakata factory in Illinois, as well as a Terex SF6004C series mainline paver incorporating a series 6 modular paving kit.
    • In 2008 the first Abigroup heavy equipment arrived in Western Australia - 651E scrapers, D11R dozer and 773E dump trucks plus support equipment. There are plans to further expand this fleet in the future to support Abigroup's growing operations in the state.
  • New head office in Victoria

The opening of a new training facility and head office for the plant division at Truganina in Victoria was a major highlight of the year. In addition to demonstrating Abigroup's ongoing commitment to providing world class infrastructure to the Victorian community, the facility provides state of the art facilities for training and equipment maintenance and highlights the importance of Abigroup's fleet to its focus on hand-on contracting.

  • New facility coming in Queensland

In 2009 the plant department will further reinforce the support offered to the business by completing a new plant and training facility in Yatala, Queensland. Works commenced in December 2008 with the facility due to open in October 2009. The facility will house the Queensland Telecommunications business, the plant team and will be a training facility for Abigroup's Northern Region.
