Abigroup awarded contract for construction of Perth's $45 million Reid Alexander Interchange Project
18 March 2010
Abigroup has been awarded the contract for construction of an overpass at one of West Australia’s most notorious accident black spots at the intersection of the Reid Highway and Alexander Drive in Perth by Main Roads Western Australia.
More than 75,000 vehicles use the intersection every day and as well as being heavily congested the intersection has cost the community some $10m over the last five years in road crashes.
The decision to award the contract to Abigroup follows the recent opening of Stage 2 of the $52m Geraldton Southern Transport Corridor - which Abigroup completed for Main Roads Western Australia two and a half months ahead of schedule.
Maurice Dessauvagie, Abigroup’s Western Australia General Manager, said, “The Reid Alexander Interchange project is a critical initiative undertaken by Main Roads to improve road user safety and we’re proud to be associated with the construction of such an important project.
“It shows that we’re really making our mark on the West Australian road building scene especially following on from the recent success of the Geraldton Southern Transport Corridor Stage 2 project which we were able to complete ahead of schedule using innovative construction methods and technologies new to WA.”
The intersection will be constructed in a traditional ‘diamond’ layout and consists of two separate bridges to carry Reid Highway traffic over Alexander Drive. Included in the contract is widening works in Alexander Drive to provide a double southbound right turn on to the Reid Highway westbound and a bus lane in each direction.
The project includes:
- 1.4km of dual carriageway and ramps;
- new traffic lights and traffic signs;
- noise walls;
- cycle paths;
- revegetation and landscaping works; and
- provision for public art on the bridge abutments.
Construction work on the Reid Alexander Interchange is due to begin in June 2010 with completion scheduled for April 2011.
Signing of Abigroup's second major roadworks contract in Western Australia took place at Main Roads WA offices.
