Banora Point Upgrade Alliance wins environmental award
11 March 2010
The Banora Point Upgrade Alliance has won an environmental management award from Abigroup.
The award forms part of Abigroup’s Golden Boot program which recognises projects in which the company is involved that demonstrate innovation in the fields of environment, safety and quality.
The 2010 Golden Boot program consists of bi-monthly competitions with $1,000 being donated to the charity Youth Off The Streets by the winners of each competition.
The Banora Point Upgrade Alliance, which is upgrading a 2.5km section of the Pacific Highway at Banora Point in NSW, won February’s competition for its submission entitled ‘Incorporating Sustainability into the Main Office Compound'.
The Alliance, which consists of the RTA, Abigroup Contractors, Seymour Whyte Constructions and SMEC, is demonstrating innovation through energy efficient building design, water use reduction and the re-use of local resources.
- the use of Solaris panels to reduce thermal effects;
- using surplus fill material from a local development site;
- sourcing second-hand office furniture and fixtures; and
- the installation of rainwater tanks and water saving devices.
As part of the same competition Abigroup’s Building the Education Revolution schools project in Sydney was highly commended for introducing effective systems to assist with the environmental management of over 170 schools.
These include school-specific environmental control plans, combined inspection checklists, pre-start workshops and pre-start training programs. The system is achieving high levels of environmental performance across the schools.
