Abigroup working to encourage women in construction

03 March 2010

Abigroup will be celebrating International Women’s Day on Monday 8 March with a free BBQ for all Head Office staff on the roof of the company’s Gordon headquarters.

The BBQ is just one of a series of events Abigroup is supporting to encourage women’s involvement in the construction industry.

These include sponsoring five events being run by the Sydney Division of Women in Engineering (WIE) - an Engineers Australia initiative - and organising a two day visit to the Enlarged Cotter Dam and Googong Dam Spillway projects in ACT.

As well as sponsoring events Abigroup has also set up a Women’s Leadership Forum and introduced family friendly policies like paid maternity leave and flexible working practices to encourage more women to enter and remain in the construction industry.

Abigroup’s Managing Director David Jurd said, “Fundamentally, accessing the skills of the whole population for our workforce is good business.

“Women need to be better represented, and supported, in the construction industry if we are to assemble the best teams into the future.”

Abigroup’s sponsorship of WIE covers all of its major events for 2010, including:

  • International Women’s Day networking evening in March;
  • Kayaking Family day in April;
  • Panel Discussion in July;
  • Business Breakfast in September; and
  • Christmas Dinner in November.

Abigroup’s Platinum sponsorship deal with WIE follows on from the company’s Gold Sponsorship last year in which Abigroup sponsored a highly successful business breakfast which attracted 180 guests.
