Abigroup selected as preferred proponent for Cairns Base Hospital Redevelopment
08 October 2010
Abigroup has been selected as the preferred managing contractor on a major project to redevelop Cairns Base Hospital in Queensland.
The $260 million contract involves the design and construction of three stages of works including the new clinical services building (Block D) and the staged refurbishment of the existing Blocks A, B and C.
Abigroup’s Queensland General Manager Steve Abson said, “The project will result in a significant increase in health service capacity for the Cairns region and we look forward to starting work. Abigroup is committed to maintaining Queensland Health’s service delivery to the Cairns community throughout the delivery of the project.”
The project will require detailed planning and coordination due to significant space constraints and the sensitivity of working in a hospital precinct environment.
Announcing the project, Queensland Deputy Premier and Minister for Health Paul Lucas said the first large scale construction activity on site would be the demolition of the existing car park and other nearby buildings to make way for the new seven-storey Block D.
“As well as starting on Block D, Abigroup will be working with the hospital to start on a number of priority construction areas including expanding the Intensive Care Unit, Special Care Nursery for sick babies and the birthing suites,” said Mr Lucas.
“Later works will include the substantial refurbishment of the existing buildings and expansion of the Mental Health Unit.”
Works are due to commence in early November 2010 and the project is due to be completed in July 2014.
