Sydney Olympics celebrates tenth anniversary

16 September 2010

Wednesday 15 September marked the tenth anniversary of the start of the Sydney 2000 Olympics and a series of celebrations were held around the city.

It also was a big day for Abigroup as the company built the largest number of facilities for the Olympics. These works, together with the M2 project in the mid 90s, really put Abigroup on the map as a top tier contractor.

The biggest contract Abigroup carried out was for Acer Arena (then called the Sydney SuperDome) which was the venue for the basketball and gymnastics events.

Acer Arena was the second largest contract awarded for the Olympics and Abigroup designed, constructed and operated the $292 million project in Homebush Bay which has become one of the world’s most exciting and innovative live entertainment and indoor sporting venues. Billboard recently rated Acer Arena as the third most profitable venue in the world.

The massive 21,000 seat stadium is one of the largest rooms in Australia and incorporates the latest in state of the art technology and leading edge design. It has the largest unsupported roof in the Southern Hemisphere with an overall roof area of 12,000 square metres and a clear span of 75 metres.

To support Acer Arena, Abigroup constructed a 3500 space multi-storey carpark: the largest carpark in the Southern Hemisphere at the time of building.

Abigroup also built the Olympic Tennis Centre at Homebush Bay.

The $34 million project involved the construction of:

  • six practice and nine match courts;
  • a centre court;
  • an administration and players’ building; and
  • civil works, drainage and services.

Another facility built by Abigroup for the Sydney Olympics was the Regatta Centre in Penrith.

Built on the site of a former sand and gravel quarry the project included a 1000 seat pavilion with a retractable roof and tiered seating.

Two boatsheds were also built which can each hold up to 890 craft. The upper floors are used for venue management, offices, medical support and meeting rooms.

Among the other facilities Abigroup built for the 2000 Olympics were the water features at Sydney Olympic Park.

This award winning project involved the earthworks, piling, concrete construction, stone and paving finishes, fountain and feature works including steelworks and electrical reticulation.
