Abigroup team wins AIB Professional Excellence Award

19 July 2010

The team that delivered the Camberwell Civic Precinct Renewal – Stage 1 project has won a Professional Excellence Award from the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) Victorian division.

The Awards are designed to recognise team performance during the delivery of a project rather than focusing on the project outcome or completed structure.

Project Manager Anthony Phillips and his team won the Award for their work on a $22.5m project redeveloping  Boroondara City Council’s Civic Precinct in the heart of Camberwell in Victoria, improving the Council’s accessibility and efficiency, while creating a new focal point within the municipality.

Anthony said, “The team worked closely with the client and consultants from the start of the project to develop the initial concept into a high quality end product that also serves the functional needs of the client and the precinct.”

The project included ornate restoration work requiring specific detailing, trade work and skill, which was undertaken by Abigroup’s in-house specialist hard plaster craftsman Frank Taverna.

A skillful coordination of works was required to ensure the operations of council services remained undisturbed during the work and the overall success of the project – which was completed 14 weeks ahead of schedule - can be attributed to the close working relationship that developed between contractor and client.

Vince Haining, Boroondara City Council’s Director City Works, said, “Abigroup worked closely with our team to consistently identify better value for money outcomes.

“Abigroup’s capacity to understand client needs and expectations and translate these into high quality outcomes was much appreciated.”

Anthony said he was proud to accept the Award on behalf of the entire project team and he thanked them for their contribution.

“Projects like the Camberwell Civic Precinct Renewal - Stage 1 are only successful when a team of people come together and commit themselves to a common goal,” he said.

“Our goal was to deliver a facility of the highest quality for both the client and the local community in a timely, efficient and safe manner, which we achieved through a combination of individual hard work and teamwork.”

Anthony and his team will now be entered into the national awards – the winners of which will be announced later in the year.
