Abigroup to open new Townsville CBD headquarters

16 March 2010

Leading national construction and engineering contractor Abigroup is to play a significant role in Townsville’s re-emerging central business district.

The company, which delivers works in water, rail, mining services, tunnels, roads, bridges, building and telecommunications, has secured a 650 sq m headquarters at 52 Walker Street in a move that has been applauded by Townsville’s civic leaders.

Abigroup is best known in the region for its work on projects such as Townsville Port Access Road, James Cook University Medical School, Water Matters Alliance and Magnetic Island’s Blue on Blue Resort.

Earlier this month it was named preferred contractor for the construction component of the $110 million duplication of the Douglas Arterial Road in a joint venture with Seymour Whyte .

Abigroup’s North Queensland manager Gary Inness said the company had outgrown  its Garbutt facility on the outskirts of Townsville and was now positioning itself to compete for a range of future construction and engineering projects.

“Abigroup first established a presence in Townsville in 1994 and since that time we are proud to have played a hand in the city’s enormous growth,” said Mr Inness.

“After a hectic few years, we felt that the time was right to open a large and sophisticated CBD headquarters that would provide us with the space and facilities to take on a range of upcoming projects.

“Our significant investment into this facility also signals our long term commitment to the city of Townsville and the surrounding region.”

Abigroup is currently refurbishing the offices at 52 Walker Street and the company will move in later this month.

Townsville’s Deputy Mayor and Planning and Economic Development Chairman David Crisafulli welcomed Abigroup’s decision to relocate its offices into the CBD.

"We are trying to breathe life back into the city heart with our revitalisation of the CBD," Cr Crisafulli said.

"But Council can only be the catalyst for change. The only way to guarantee success in the years ahead is for large companies and government bodies to call the CBD home, and the retail and dining opportunities will flow from this.

"Abigroup has made a statement that they not only want to play an even longer term role in the most diverse economy in the country, but they also want to be part of the changing face of our CBD."

Abigroup has completed in excess of 90 projects in the Townsville region since 1994.
