Abigroup sponsors Rugby League Super Saturday

25 June 2010

Leading national construction and engineering contractor Abigroup is sponsoring a major rugby league tournament in Gympie on Saturday 26 June to celebrate 100 years of league in the region.

The Abigroup League Super Saturday - which is being organised by Gympie Cooloola Rugby League Football Club – will feature eight matches including a game between players from Brisbane City vs Queensland Country players and a Queensland vs NSW Women’s Origin game.

The City vs Country game, which is being broadcast on ABC TV, will help selectors choose the Queensland residents’ team and selectors will also use the women’s match to select players for a national side.

Abigroup’s Queensland Engineering Manager Peter Fitzgerald said, “Abigroup is proud to support this regional Queensland rugby league tournament.

“We believe in putting back into the communities where we work and Gympie is close to one of our major projects: the Cooroy to Curra Bulk Earthworks Bruce Highway Upgrade.”

Abigroup’s sponsorship includes the naming rights for the tournament and advertising on the field and around the ground. There will be a corporate marquee in which one of Abigroup’s mobile heavy machinery simulators that use world first technology, will be on show.

Guests will be able to try out the simulators - which replicates the operation of scrapers and graders - in return for a donation which will go to charity. Real earth moving machinery will also be on display at the ground.

Abigroup will be receiving two rugby balls – a pink ball signed by the Women’s State of Origin team and a yellow one signed by the Country vs City players. These balls will be auctioned or raffled by Abigroup at a future date to raise more money for charity.

Gympie Cooloola Rugby League Football Club Manager Scott Dodt said, “We’re very grateful to Abigroup for their generous sponsorship and support of our tournament.

“It’s great to see a company investing in our local community and we’re confident that the day will be a fitting tribute to a hundred years of league in Gympie.”

As well as the tournament, the Club is also organising  a celebratory dinner on Friday 25 June at the Gympie Civic Centre.
