Company Background
Abigroup Limited is strongly committed to delivering excellence to clients through its engineering, building, water, mining services and telco & energy businesses.
Established as Abignano Pty Limited in 1961, the company originally provided civil engineering services within NSW and was listed on the Stock Exchange in 1981.
In 1984 Abignano acquired Enacon Limited’s companies followed by Robert Salzer Constructions in 1987. These acquisitions enabled the company to successfully offer building services throughout Victoria, NSW and Queensland.
In 1988, following a management buyout, Abignano’s name was changed to Abigroup and NSW based building company Hughes Bros Pty Limited was acquired.
There then followed a period of rapid growth and in the early 1990s Abigroup’s position as a respected, top-tier infrastructure provider was confirmed when the company beat fierce competition to secure the $450 million contract for the M2 Motorway.
With a host of further high profile successes, including the technically complex Sydney SuperDome (now Acer Arena), by the late 1990s Abigroup was positioned as one of the industry’s strongest and most innovative civil engineering contractors, builders and project managers.
Abigroup provided more venues for the 2000 Sydney Olympics than any other contractor and in 2003, in a joint venture, was awarded what was at the time the largest single infrastructure contract in Australian history: the $1.5billion Western Sydney Orbital (now the Westlink M7 Motorway). The project, which was completed in 2006, stands as the country’s best example of a successful PPP to date.
Valemus (formally Bilfinger Berger Australia) was established in 2003 as the holding company of Bilfinger Berger AG’s investments in Australia. In 2004 Abigroup was acquired by Bilfinger Berger AG, one of the world’s largest multi-service construction groups. Bilfinger Berger’s backing provided Abigroup with access to the immense global resources of the organisation.
Valemus is now one of the largest multi service groups operating in the construction and infrastructure services markets in Australia with a forecast turnover of $4.6 billion in 2010. It is the parent company to Abigroup, Baulderstone and Conneq.
After the acquisition Abigroup experienced strong growth and set up three specialist national businesses covering Mining Services, Water and Telco & Energy and expanded its engineering services to Western Australia.
Abigroup’s story continues to unfold with recent unprecedented success across all areas of our operations.
With our strong, dedicated team and the wealth of knowledge acquired in good and bad times, we look forward to Constructing Australia’s Future while being proud of our history and achievements to date.
